MORGADO DO QUINTÃO
Originally established in the early 1800s by the first Count of Silves, this historic winery is nestled between the Monchique mountains and Lagoa. Still owned by the fourth generation of the founding family, the estate remains dedicated to preserving indigenous grape varieties like Negra Mole and Crato Branco, which are integral to centuries-old Algarvian wine traditions such as palhete and clarete. Filipe Caldas de Vasconcellos took over responsibility for the estate from his mother, Teresa, and recognized the vineyards' potential and the beauty of their old vines. For generations, the family supplied their grapes to the local cooperative, but in 2016, Filipe decided to forge a new path by creating the estate’s very first vintage wines while fully honoring the heritage of the region.
He partnered with the highly regarded winemaker Joana Maçanita to craft authentic wines that reflect the true essence of the Algarve, guided by Joana’s motto: "menos homem, mais terra" — "Less man, more land."
Thus, sustainable farming is a cornerstone of Morgado do Quintão, enhancing soil health, boosting biodiversity, and improving grape quality to ensure long-term resilience and environmental balance.
Sitting under a 2,000-year-old olive tree, savoring the wines, and gazing out at the vineyards, you can truly feel the magic of this place.
ALGARVE
The Algarve is the southernmost wine region in Portugal, featuring a climate with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Due to the cool Atlantic winds year-round, the day-night temperature gap, even during the summer, is significant, providing perfect conditions for the vines to retain their acidity.
The predominant soils are sandy loess mixed with limestone, which store moisture during hot summers. Among others, two indigenous grape varieties play a vital role: Crato Branco (white) and Negra Mole (red), which result in unique, elegant, and fresh wines.
